You didn't play in the betas, did you?
Rurik still isn't that great even now, but back then he was a suicidal lunatic.
God, how many missions I almost completed just to have Rurik charge into a huge mob and get killed
Thank goodness the only time I'll ever have to deal wit him again on any of my chars is when I kill him.

The Horror...The Horror...The Horror....
In the betas, a lot of the missions were somewhat unbalanced (read, impossibly difficult) and one of the common problems people would have was that Rurik would never stop charging forward and then proceed to get super nuked and beat down by all the enemies he aggroed, followed shortly by the immediate demise of the party (well, that is if you didn't actually fail the mission everytime Prince Charming gets his ass nailed to a tree)
I believe one of the more famously difficult ones was The Frost Gate where, unlike the other missions Rurik is in, you can't really keep him alive. Not to mention, the ending was comprised of one more big area before the actual pulleys, and the pulley area was a lot harder.
Of course, objectively, it comes down to everytime someone failed a mission Rurik was involved in, Rurik got blamed for the failure, because hes a suitable scapegoat, being one that can't backlash and point out your own faults and failures.
Oh, and he's a overzealous melodramatic twit.
Edit: another thing is that in a popularity contest, Gwen pwns Rurik hardcore any day of the week because Gwen, aside from being a slight help in pre-searing, hurls massive fireballs every second and then clones herself, making her vastly more useful in the job of killing things than Rurik could ever hope to be. Of course, Gwen spent most of her time killing us, so she does have one minor flaw...

Yeah, Gwen's pretty badass, as you can see:

So now i'm like.. sad and junk, so you should like .. get my flute back. Also, this totally isn't a request. I know where you live and I will burn your house down if you don't get my flute back. I like butterflies and peanut butter!" and with an innocent giggle belying her nefarious true nature, Gwen skipped away.

At the very least, Vizier Khilbron has a much cooler outfit than either Confessor Dorian or King Adelbern. If that counts for anything...
There is one bad thing about Rurik dying... He promised me a brew! "Why yes, Aayla, if you and your friends here do all the work killing the evil dwarven baddies, I'd be happy to share some ale with you, seeing as that 200 gold/per price is somewhat out of your reach right now..." And then he goes and dies. Without me getting my drink, even.

Remember those warm cottages in the Frost Gate mission launchpad? The ones that closed their doors to us? Rurik was in them, boozing it up with the Dwarves and their ale, while we were left out in the snow waiting for him. He had that splitting headache coming I tell you.
